What You Should Be Doing To Maintain Your Home's Air Conditioner

Have you not paid much attention to your air conditioner since it has been installed? If so, you are likely long overdue for performing some maintenance on it. Here are some things that you should be doing to maintain your air conditioner.

Check The Blower Wheel

Your air conditioner has an air handler on the inside of your home with a blower wheel. The entire blower motor housing should be something that you can reach with your hands to see how dirty is it. Just make sure that the power is shut off before checking it. If the blower wheel is covered with dust and debris, then you will need to remove the blower wheel and clean it thoroughly. The blower motor does not need any type of lubrication added to it, so there is no need to add any to keep it turning smoothly.

Turn Off Your Humidifier During The Summer

There is enough humidity in the air during the summer, and your air conditioner is actively removing the humidity as well. That is why it is worth verifying that your humidifier has been turned off if you have one. If it is still turned on, then you are just making your air conditioner work harder than it has to in order to cool down the air.

Keep Your Air Returns Clear

Many people ignore the fact that their air return vents need to be clear in order for your air conditioner to work properly. This requires you to go through your home, move items in front of the return, and clean off dust that could be restricting airflow. Without the proper amount of air coming back through the return air duct, the air conditioner is not going to have the air it needs to keep your home cool.

Replace The Thermostat Batteries

If your thermostat has the option for a battery backup, it is important that you replace the batteries when they become weak. Some thermostats depend on batteries for power, while others do not. However, you do not want to be in a situation where your thermostat battery dies unexpectedly. You could end up having a system that does not turn off while you are not home or never turns on as scheduled.

These are just a few air-conditioning maintenance tips. Reach out to a professional to have all the hard stuff inspected and tested for you.
